Shade Tapestry Pack
The Shade Tapestry
Theme: A woodland mix of contrasting textures and foliage.
Light: Part Shade to Full Shade (Dappled light or morning sun only)
Soil: Medium to Moist, rich in organic matter
Spacing: Plant 12–18 inches apart.
Design Tip: Let the Wild Ginger and Foamflower weave between the others as a living mulch. Place the Solomon's Seal and Christmas Fern where their height can be appreciated.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot summer dry spells.
Winter Care: Leave fallen leaves around these plants! Natural leaf litter acts as the perfect free mulch, enriching the soil and protecting the roots over winter. The Christmas Fern will remain green all winter.
Included Plants: Christmas Fern, American Alumroot, Foamflower, Wild Ginger, Smooth Solomon’s Seal, Eastern Red Columbine.
- Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides): Provides evergreen structure and a classic, deep-green frond texture.
- American Alumroot (Heuchera americana): Offers beautiful, low-mounding scalloped foliage with striking silver and purple venation.
- Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia): Spreads gently as a groundcover, offering fuzzy, deeply lobed leaves and delicate bottle-brush spring flowers.
- Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense): Large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves that create a dense, weed-suppressing ground layer.
- Smooth Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum biflorum): Adds height and architectural elegance with its arching stems and dangling, bell-shaped spring flowers.
- Eastern Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis): Adds a pop of early spring red/yellow color with airy, delicate, fern-like foliage that contrasts with the heavier ginger and heuchera leaves.
